Introduction: Build Your Dream Workbench
This project guides you through building a sturdy and versatile 72-inch workbench with a built-in mobile base. This workbench will provide ample workspace and easy maneuverability around your shop or garage. Get ready to upgrade your workspace!
Materials List
You'll need the following materials for this project:
  • Lumber: 4x4 posts (8 ft), 2x4 lumber (various lengths as specified in the cut list below), ¾" plywood (4x8 sheet).
  • Hardware: Wood screws (various sizes, e.g., 1 ¼", 2 ½", 3"), lag bolts (3/8" x 3"), washers, locking casters (4), t-nuts (for caster mounting), wood glue.
  • Optional: Edge banding for plywood top, polyurethane or other wood finish.
  • Tools List
Make sure you have these tools on hand:
  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Impact driver (optional, but helpful)
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Square
  • Clamps
  • Safety glasses and hearing protection
  • Step 1: Cut the Lumber
Using your cut list (example below, adjust to your needs):
  • 4x4 Posts: Cut four posts to 34" each (Legs).
  • 2x4s: Cut two at 72" (Long Rails), two at 24" (Short Rails), four at 72" (Top Supports), two at 24" (Bottom Supports), four at 12" (Caster Supports).
  • Plywood: Cut one piece to 24" x 72" (Workbench Top).
  • Step 2: Assemble the Base Frame
  • Attach the Long Rails and Short Rails to the inside of the 4x4 posts to create the rectangular base frame. Use wood glue and 3" screws. Ensure the top edge of the rails are flush with the top of the posts.
  • Clamp the joints and allow the glue to dry. Use a square to ensure the corners are at 90 degrees.
  • Step 3: Add Bottom Supports
  • Attach the Bottom Supports (2x4s) between the legs, near the bottom of the frame. This will provide added stability and support for the mobile base.
  • Use wood glue and 3" screws for a secure connection.
  • Step 4: Install Caster Supports
  • Attach the Caster Supports (2x4s) inside the frame at each corner, close to the bottom supports, to create a platform for the casters.
  • Use wood glue and 3" screws.
  • Step 5: Mount the Casters
  • Pre-drill holes in the Caster Supports for the T-nuts. Install the T-nuts.
  • Attach the locking casters to the Caster Supports using bolts through the caster mounting plates and into the T-nuts.
  • Step 6: Add Top Supports
  • Attach the Top Supports (2x4s) along the top inside of the frame, flush with the top of the frame. These will support the plywood workbench top.
  • Use wood glue and 3" screws.
  • Step 7: Attach the Workbench Top
  • Place the plywood workbench top onto the frame, ensuring it is centered.
  • Attach the top to the Top Supports using wood glue and 1 ¼" screws from underneath.
  • Step 8: Finishing Touches (Optional)
  • Apply edge banding to the plywood top for a cleaner look.
  • Sand the entire workbench to smooth out any rough edges.
  • Apply a finish such as polyurethane to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying time.
  • Step 9: Final Inspection
  • Inspect all joints to ensure they are secure.
  • Test the casters to ensure they roll smoothly and the locking mechanisms work.
  • Make any necessary adjustments.
  • Conclusion: Enjoy Your New Mobile Workbench!
Congratulations, you've successfully built a sturdy and mobile workbench! This workbench will provide years of reliable service and make your projects easier and more enjoyable. Time to put it to work!
