Position the support legs inside the step sides, ensuring the tapered ends rest on the ground. The top of the support legs should be flush with the inside of the step sides. Apply wood glue, clamp, drill pilot holes, and secure with 1 1/4" screws. Ensure the legs are free to pivot.
Attach the leg connectors to the support legs, positioned approximately 2" from the top of the legs. Use wood glue, clamp, drill pilot holes, and secure with 1 1/4" screws. These connectors will limit the leg extension and provide stability when the stool is open.
Attach the brace between the leg connectors. This brace will further stabilize the legs and ensure they move together. Use wood glue, clamp, drill pilot holes, and secure with 1 1/4" screws.
Center the piano hinge on the inside top edge of the assembled step top and sides, connecting it to the top of the support legs. Make sure the stool is in its closed position when attaching the hinge. Drill pilot holes and secure with 1/2" screws (or screws that come with the hinge). This allows the stool to fold flat.
Inspect all joints for strength and stability. Sand any rough edges. Apply your chosen wood finish (stain, paint, varnish) to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. Allow the finish to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.
